Dr. von Recum is a professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. He received his BA/BA in Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering from Rice University (1992) as well as his MChE in Chemical Engineering (1993), and he moved on to earn his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Utah (1998). After his PhD, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Chemical Engineering and Genetics with the Langer Lab at MIT and Harvard Medical School on an NIH NRSA Fellowship (1998-2001). Afterwards, he was a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow in Hematology and Bioengineering at the University of Washington on an NIH Hematology Training Grant (2001-2004).
Since 2005, Dr. von Recum has been faculty in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Case Western Reserve University. During his time at Case, he has formed a successful startup company, Affinity Therapeutics, and has mentored numerous undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral associates. He is a member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCCC), an American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers (AIMBE) fellow, and President-Elect of the Society for Biomaterials (SFB, 2018-2020). He has received numerous awards, including an NSF Career Award and multiple teaching and mentorship awards.
